A hydroelectric key project for Cameroon

The project site is located 70 km north-east of the capital Yaoundé. The dam, built on the Sanaga River, will be 1.455 km long and the headrace channel will be 3.3 km long. With an installed capacity of 420 MW, Nachtigal will be the most powerful electricity generating facility in Cameroon when it is commissioned. The development, construction and operation of this hydroelectric scheme is the responsibility of the Cameroonian company Nachtigal Hydro Power Company (NHPC), which is 40% owned by EDF.

A major industrial project for the sustainable development of Cameroon

When commissioned in 2024, Nachtigal will be the most powerful power plant in Cameroon and a real asset for the sustainable development of the country.

With a capacity of 420MW, the dam will provide around 30% of the electricity consumption of the interconnected network in Southern Cameroon. It will produce green, competitive electricity available all year round.

A site placing health and safety at the heart of its priority

  • Policies in favor of the preservation of the health and safety of individuals and the safety of property and heritage
  • More than 15 million work hours without serious accidents on the site thanks to a strong awareness of all the actors who intervene on the site

  • Innovative and long-term actions in favor of the preservation of the environment
  • A commitment for the preservation of the fundamental rights of the project workers

The Nachtigal Project is:

  • A  hydroelectric scheme comprising a conventional vibrated concrete dam (intake and spillway), a 4.5 MW foot plant and a roller-compacted concrete section of 1380 m long and 13.5 m height on the Sanaga River which is a 3.3 km long canal, and a power plant equipped with 7 turbines of 60 MW, for a total installed capacity of 420 MW.
  • A power transmission line of 50 km-long and 225,000 V between the Nachtigal site and Nyom II;
  • An operating city that will accommodate the development operating teams.
