A commitment to support the activities of fishermen and fishmongers while preserving biodiversity

NHPC and the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA) signed a partnership agreement on October 23, 2024, regarding the support of fishing and aquaculture activities in the Nachtigal project area, as well as the monitoring of the strategy for compensating fish species impacted by the project.

The signing of this partnership agreement is part of the environmental and social commitments made by NHPC under its Environmental and Social Management Plan, aimed at restoring the livelihoods of those affected by the Nachtigal project and preserving aquatic biodiversity. It follows the approval of the Nachtigal fishery management plan.

Through this agreement, NHPC and MINEPIA have committed to collaborate in a coordinated and effective manner to implement all the measures and actions outlined in the plan.

About the Nachtigal fishery management plan

Developed following a study and validated at the national level by MINEPIA in June 2023, the Nachtigal fishery management plan aims to restore the livelihoods of fishermen and fishmongers affected by the Nachtigal project, as well as to govern the fishery resource in the water reservoir created.

This plan includes, among other things, the creation of a fishing zone in the Nachtigal dam reservoir, the construction of a landing stage, the organization and formalization of fishermen and fishmongers into fishing cooperatives, as well as training on fishing techniques suitable for the reservoir for those to be relocated, and modern fish processing techniques for the fishmongers.

Its implementation began in 2024 and is expected to benefit over 200 people.
