Nachtigal: decarbonized electricity in the service of Cameroon
Commissioned in March 2025, Nachtigal is the most powerful hydroelectric plant in Cameroon. It represents a significant asset for the country’s sustainable development. With a capacity of 420 MW, it covers nearly 30% of Cameroon’s energy needs with clean, available, and inexpensive electricity.
In addition to contributing to reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change, Nachtigal economically and socially improves the quality of life for local populations, stimulate economic growth, and actively contributes to the country's development, while achieving savings on fuel purchases and imports.

A public-private partnership model
The largest ongoing Public-Private Partnership project in Sub-Saharan Africa in the energy sector, Nachtigal has received:
- The 2018 Project of the Year Award in the Multilateral Financing category from Project Finance International (PFI)
- The 2024 Best Energy – Renewable Resources Project Award from the African Investment Forum & Awards (AIFA)
A Strong Environmental and Social Ambition
Nachtigal carries a strong environmental and social ambition, including:
- An exemplary and responsible social support for impacted communities
- Significant and diverse local economic benefits
- Innovative, long-term actions for environmental preservation
- A commitment to safeguarding the fundamental rights of project workers
- Support for the local economic development of the project’s area of implementation
This ambition fully aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN.
Health, safety, and hydroelectric security at the core of priorities
During the construction phase, the Nachtigal project made health and safety an absolute priority to protect the thousands of workers involved in the project. This strong health and safety culture has allowed the project to achieve over 15 million work hours without a major accident on site.
In the operational phase, the Nachtigal project focuses on hydraulic safety, aiming for no major hydraulic safety incidents and the development of a highly efficient hydroelectric installation.
