EDF Group Foundation projects in Cameroon
Support for the Cashew Nut and Ecosystem Restoration Sector
Planète Urgence has initiated the pilot project "Cashew and Ecosystem Restoration (FARE)" which supports its Cameroonian partner CERAF-Nord in the implementation of a cashew reforestation project (cashew trees), the restoration of wildlife migration corridors and support for the production and maintenance of cashew orchards with a view to the development of the sector, for the benefit of the local populations of the Benue National Park. The project has been supported since 2020 by the EDF Group Foundation.
Access to water for 9 isolated villages in the commune of Ma'An
In partnership with Codev Occitanie and Caprojev, the objective of this project was to improve the living conditions in 9 villages in southern Cameroon by providing access to drinking water. Each of the 9 villages was equipped with a borehole, a water tower, a water distribution system with standpipes, all powered by a photovoltaic pump running on the sun. Having enough quality water has reduced waterborne diseases and improved hygiene in these villages. The partnership has lasted since 2019, the last 3 pumping stations were put into service in January 2023.
Electrification of 17 health centres
The support of the EDF Group Foundation has enabled the installation of 11 photovoltaic systems in 11 health centres. Six other solar systems for 6 health centres are in the process of being delivered, which will bring the number of electrified health centres to 17. This project has multiple objectives, including improving the quality of care thanks to equipment that runs on electricity, extending the opening hours of the health centre, increasing the number of people attending health centres for childbirth and providing earlier vaccination.
Training in solar installations with the Université des Montagnes
The objective of the project carried out by Energies Sans Frontières with the support of the EDF Group Foundation was to provide the Renewable Energy Department of the Université des Montagnes (UdM) in Bangangté with the means to be self-sufficient for photovoltaic training. A 55kWp installation was designed for the site and installed with volunteers from Energies sans frontières and a volunteer from the EDF Group Foundation as a skills sponsor. The work was completed at the end of 2021. The installation allows students in photovoltaic training to study and understand how a solar installation works and to gain experience in its maintenance in real conditions. Énergies Sans Frontières worked with the teachers at the Université des Montagnes to develop the photovoltaic training curriculum. The aim is to pass on skills and knowledge to ensure the sustainability of solar installations in Cameroon.
