Civil society organizations (CSOs) and KHPC officials held their regular annual exchange session on the Kikot-Mbebe Hydroelectric Development Project on June 23, 2026, at the Mont-Febe Hotel in Yaoundé. This meeting was co-organized with the support and effective participation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR). Also present was an expert from the European Union delegation to Cameroon.
The project's progress was presented to the audience, including the design resulting from the detailed preliminary design (APD), which is now available, as well as ongoing preparations for early works (bypass roads, new bridge over the Sanaga). Focus was placed on the findings of the various environmental and social studies.
Thus, participants familiarized themselves with the key terms of the ESIA report summary (currently under review by the competent authorities). They also reviewed the various avoidance, mitigation, compensation, and enhancement measures to which CSOs have contributed, namely: the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP), the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP), the Livelihood Restoration Plan (LRP), and the Local Development Action Plan (LDAP). Emphasis was placed on the updated version of the Grievance Mechanism (MGRP).
In this regard, Mr. Thierno Souleymane Bah, Human Rights Officer at the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, during a dedicated session, educated and raised awareness among participants on the issues and importance of this Grievance Mechanism for better CSO involvement and the overall success of the project.
